thanks to corrie evans barkdull, i'm going to document the frustrations and excitements found in the life of a military family, starting here in vegas, our first duty station. after eight months of being away from my husband while he trained and being without a home, we are seriously "just happy to be here" as the saying goes. it didn't really matter where we got stationed, we are just happy to finally see each other and unpack all of our things together.
not that vegas isn't cool. for the first week or so i couldn't drive straight on the road for staring out at the mountains all around us. they are absolutely the best part of vegas, probably because of the three times i've visited vegas, i never remembered looking at them. stupid big city with too many lights and sounds ;)
apparently there are lots of outdoor recreational activities, so we'll definitely be looking into those...
some big differences between las vegas and south carolina:
- nosebleeds. i get 'em almost every day out here.
- no chick-fil-a. yet. they are supposed to be building one soon.
- wildlife. i don't know if pigeons count as wildlife, but i killed one the other day driving adam to work. i was going 2 miles an hour, figured the little guy would move, and rolled right over him. it was disgusting and sad. i think animals are just dazed 24/7 by the heat and sun. on a good note, there aren't many little bugs around, most can't live in the heat. mosquitos, fleas, cockroaches are all either nonexistent or too few to matter.
- plants. that's the sad part. the only plants here are little brown, dusty cotton ball looking bushes that grow in the sand. other than that, if it doesn't have a drip system or some other irrigation going to it, it's not there.
- people. so far everyone has been super nice, but i'm sure that's how it'd be at any base. it seems like everyone knows that they're in the same boat, just trying to make this new lifestyle work for their families. i've felt the air force love, that's for sure!
